Hundreds of residents fled their homes in Maiduguri as sporadic and sustained gun shots rang out in the city.
A
military source Confirm to us that some Boko Haram who fled Sambisa
Forest, a notorious Boko Haram
camp, following heavy bombardment by the
military forces, launched sporadic shooting at about 6.30pm yesterday.
The
Nigerian troops have been pushing out the insurgents as air and ground
assault on the major Boko Haram Sambisa hideout continued. Some of the
insurgents who fled the onslaught were said to have fired several shots
in an attempt to enter the city through the cashew plantation, behind
the Giwa Army Barrack yesterday.
Boko Haram had attacked the
barrack early 2013 through same route which also lead to Borno central
town of Konduga, about 15 kilometres to Sambisa.
Many residents
of GRA said they fled their houses as shooting rages till darkness
enveloped the capital city. “I couldn’t wait because I saw many people
parking their few luggages and fleeing into the central area of the
city,” a resident who did not want his name in print told us.
He
said he decide to “move out” his family from the GRA-few metres away
from the shooting area-because the shooting was getting closer to the
city every passing moment.”
There was no official statement from the military as at the time of filing this report.
